Bathing Suggestions

Time this activity for success

Pick a time that is less frustrating and pressured for both of you.  If your loved one is tired it can actually be more stimulating than relaxing.

Give your loved one a reason for the bath

Often times the Alzheimer’s client is resistant to showering or bathing.   If you give them a reason that is part of their routine or past interest they will be more willing to cooperate.   I will often say “We are going to visit with your son” or “Tomorrow we are going to church”

Warm the room and the water before you start

Individuals with Alzheimer’s disease are very sensitive to temperature changes.   Make sure you warm up the bathroom before you start to do the undressing.   Have the room warm and a big towel or terry cloth bath robe ready when the client gets out of the shower or bath to keep them warm.

Assemble all the materials you need for bathing before you start

This often includes towel, deodorant, powder, skin cream, clothes, etc.

Hand held shower head Helps

This will be helpful because you can direct the water when rinsing the client.   This helps because many Alzheimer’s clients don’t like water in their face.   It is easier to rinse their hair with this in the bath or shower.

Bath seat or bench

If the client is bathing in a tub it is safer to have them sitting to wash their legs and feet.   A bath bench is helpful if the person bathing or showering in a tub has a mobility or balance issue which makes stepping over the tub side difficult.   The client can sit on the bench outside the tub and swing legs into the tub safely.  Bathing with a seat or bench in the tub or shower is easier with a hand held shower head.

Try playing soft or relaxing music before bath time

Allow your loved one to test the water before getting in the shower/tub

As stated before, individuals with Alzheimer’s disease are more sensitive to temperature so it will help you adjust the water to their comfort level and make the experience more positive.
